Understand the Signs of Alcohol & Drug Abuse for Adults
The most obvious sign of a substance abuse problem is the need to have a particular drug. However, many other signs can suggest a possible addiction, such as changes in mood or weight loss or gain.
Signs that someone you know may be abusing drugs or alcohol include:
Behavior
- Drink alone or in secret
- Change in overall personality
- Frequent intoxication, pattern of heavy drinking
- Extreme hyperactivity; excessive talking
- Can't remember conversations or commitments
- Consistently becomes angry or violent for no apparent reason
Physical Appearance/Habits
- Unexplained weight loss or gain
- Frequent falls or unexplained bruises
- Concealed marks or lines on arms or legs
- Keeps alcohol in unlikely places at home, work or in car
Work/Social
- Recurring failure to fulfill obligations at work or home
- Tardiness, frequent absences from work
- Withdrawal from family members
- Loss of interest in usual activities, hobbies or sports
Health
- Dilated pupils or bloodshot eyes
- Depression; talk or attempt of suicide
- Inability to sleep or unusual sleep patterns
- Runny nose, not caused by allergies or a cold
- Unexplained nausea, vomiting or excessive sweating
Financial/Legal
- Unexplained need for money
- Not able to account for spending
- Missing household funds or valuables
- Spends large sums of money (selling drugs)
- Repeated legal problems or criminal offenses
- Caught shoplifting or stealing
