Drug Treatment and Alcohol Treatment Information

In addition to Gateway Alcohol and Drug Rehab's services and substance abuse treatment plans, we recommend certain support groups for you and alcohol or drug addiction recovery programs for your loved one.

Al-Anon & Alcoholics Anonymous

Al-Anon (Alateen for younger members) has been helping families and friends of alcoholics and other substance abusers for more than 50 years. People who use alcohol and drugs affect the lives of the people around them. Regardless of the kind of relationship, if you have been affected by someone else’s substance abuse, Al-Anon/Alateen may be able to help you with your feelings of hopelessness, anxiety or even despair.

Similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon and Alateen hold meetings for their members "to share their own experiences, strength and hope with each other." Confidentiality is a key part of the program. Al-Anon and Alateen meetings are designed to help you deal with the situation of someone else’s substance abuse and learn a better way of life.

Seven Challenges®

As an addition to the 12-Step recovery programs for teens, Gateway Alcohol and Drug Rehab also uses the Seven Challenges® developed by Dr. Robert Schwebel.

The Seven Challenges program for teens with alcohol and drug abuse problems motivates a decision and a commitment to change. The program helps young people address their alcohol or drug abuse problems, their coping skills, and situational or psychological problems.

This program helps teens think through their own decisions about their lives and their alcohol or other drug abuse. As teens discuss their issues, counselors integrate the Challenges as part of the conversation, gently guiding them to making better decisions helping them control their lives and themselves.

In summary, the Seven Challenges for Teens are:

  1. Open up and talk honestly about your life and your drug or alcohol use.
  2. Admit what you liked about alcohol and drugs and why you are using them.
  3. Look at the harm alcohol or drug abuse is causing or could cause.
  4. Examine your own responsibility and the responsibility of others for your problems.
  5. Determine where your life is headed versus where you want it to go.
  6. Make a commitment to change.
  7. Follow through with that commitment.
