Treatment Model

Gateway’s Proven Drug Treatment and Alcohol Treatment Model

Confidential Substance Abuse Screening

Drug treatment or alcohol treatment begins with an initial confidential substance abuse screening interview and Intake assessment followed by a nurse establishing a health history and a physician review. It is then determined whether Intensive After Work/After School treatment, day treatment or residential services are required.

Based on these assessments, Gateway Alcohol and Drug Rehab will recommend an individualized drug rehab or alcohol treatment program. We’ll also help the person determine the amount of their health insurance benefits for drug rehab and alcohol treatment and any out-of-pocket expenses such as co-pays or deductibles.

Diagnosis of Substance Abuse

Should a residential program be necessary at one of our drug rehabilitation centers in Chicago, throughout Illinois, or near St. Louis, many of our previous clients have chosen to use their vacation time, paid sick time and work with their organization's Employee Assistance Program or even take a medical leave of absence also known as 'un-paid sick time.'

If you are a high school, college or university student requiring drug rehab or alcohol treatment, you can be excused from classes while maintaining your academic standing and status.

If you are a teen and require a residential program, you will attend classes at the rehabilitation center. The licensed teachers are provided through local area high schools.

Since alcohol is a drug and can cause other mental health problems such as depression, the Gateway model for both drug rehab and alcohol treatment is similar.

Customized Substance Abuse Treatment

Depending on the type of substance abuse, an individualized drug rehab or alcohol treatment program includes:

  • Education about alcohol or drug abuse, substance abuse addiction, alcohol or drug treatment and substance abuse recovery.
  • Group therapy where a trained counselor helps patients see what their use is doing to their lives and what they can do about it.
  • Individual drug or alcohol therapy to deal with issues that may be too sensitive for a group setting.
  • Introduction to substance abuse self-help to sustain recovery.
  • A substance abuse aftercare plan.

Gateway has established a number of drug rehab and alcohol treatment options to ensure that each client will receive the best possible drug rehab and alcohol treatment to overcome their substance abuse problems. Drug rehab and alcohol treatment begins with a confidential pre-screening and then progresses to a more formal intake interview and assessment. After both a nurse health history and a doctor’s report are completed, the formal drug rehab and alcohol treatment plan is developed.

Aftercare

All clients are referred to weekly substance abuse aftercare for a minimum of twelve to twenty-four weeks. These 1.5 hour group counseling sessions are designed to help patients transition from more intense levels of alcohol and drug rehab care during the early stages of substance abuse recovery. Clients help each other by sharing "how it's going" and what they have found successful in coping with the challenge of living clean and sober, often for the first time in years. The substance abuse aftercare sessions are also very supportive of their involvement in self-help.

Self-Help

In practically all cases as part of discharge planning, Gateway Alcohol and Drug Rehab recommends that a person become involved in the substance abuse self-help recovery community. Founded in 1935, the worldwide fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous has more than a million members in the United States and it has spawned similar support organizations such as Narcotics Anonymous. Those suffering from alcohol and drug addiction seek to help each other remain clean and sober by sharing their experience, strength and hope. While not part of Gateway’s levels of care, we recommend active participation in substance abuse self-help. It may not be for everybody, but over the years, it has proven to be what works best for most.
