To ensure success in substance abuse treatment and in the classroom, Gateway's Carbondale Center offers on-campus academic programs for adolescents through Carbondale Community High School.
Accessible Via Train for Families in Northern Illinois
Our Carbondale drug treatment center is easily accessible with daily Amtrak train service to Carbondale from Chicago's Union Station and surrounding suburbs, including Glenview, Naperville and Joliet. The trip from Chicago to Carbondale takes approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes, and we provide shuttle service from the Carbondale Amtrak Station to the Gateway Foundation Carbondale Treatment Center. Please inquire with our admissions department about to arranging for shuttle service.
Meet the Carbondale Staff Executive Director
Steve Wierman oversees daily operations of the Carbondale treatment center, including regulatory, clinical, outreach, as well as prevention education. However, he believes the most rewarding part of his job is watching individuals progress on the road to recovery and seeing his staff excel at changing the lives of so many people. He takes pride in seeing individuals graduate from Gateway's treatment programs, and later return to show how they have achieved and exceeded their recovery expectations.
Steve has been with Gateway for almost 15 years. Prior to that, he counseled adults and managed a program for Franklin/Williamson Human Services for six years. He also was a counselor for the Illinois Department of Corrections at Big Muddy Prison. Steve earned his BA in Psychology from The Ohio State University and his MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from Southern Illinois University.
When he's not at Gateway, he enjoys guitars, motorcycles, music, and cats.
Among her many accomplishments at Gateway Foundation Carbondale, Program Director Lori Dammermann is most proud of establishing a specialized Adolescent Girls Residential Treatment Program focused on effectively guiding troubled teen girls to recovery. Lori has been an integral member of the Gateway Foundation clinical team since 1996.
Lori oversees and leads the team that provides residential treatment for adults and adolescents at the Carbondale center. She promotes continuous improvement of substance abuse treatment approaches by analyzing program results and motivating her clinical team.
Lori earned her Master's degree in Social Work from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL.
Adolescent Program Clinical Supervisor
"Watching an individual change, succeed and grow through treatment is very motivating," says Gaia McVey, Adolescent Program Clinical Supervisor at Gateway Foundation Carbondale. With a wealth of experience in substance abuse treatment, she works closely with her team at the Adolescent Male Residential Program.
"We are flexible in our individualized treatment planning and approach for adolescents. We use a great deal of interactive activities in our group counseling sessions to help teens learn new skills in a variety of ways," explains Gaia. Gaia has been a member of the Gateway Foundation clinical team since 2000.
She obtained her Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the Rehabilitation Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL.
Ada Vieceli is a Family Therapist who joined the team at Gateway Foundation Carbondale in 2011. "It is quite satisfying when, through my work, families begin to develop more effective ways of relating to each other and establish a sound environment for lasting recovery," says Ada.
In her role, Ada delivers counseling services to families of adolescents in Residential Treatment. She also provides educational services on drug and alcohol addiction and related family issues to all families of individuals undergoing treatment at the Carbondale center.
"I encourage families to continue to respect their individual values however consider the value of change when it expands their capacity to relate successfully," explains Ada.
Ada earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL.
