Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based method of communication for supporting behavior change. This introductory webinar session introduces you to the concept and principles of Motivational Interviewing. The webinar will build upon participants' interviewing and counseling skills by teaching how to make a realistic assessment of a client's motivation for change. It outlines models to increase effectiveness with clients who are resistant to change. You will learn specific techniques to help clients explore and resolve ambivalence in order to make behavior changes.

What You Will Learn

  • Develop a high-level understanding of how evidence-based strategies can strengthen your current skill set and challenge perceptions on how to effectively motivate individuals.
  • Introduction to helping individuals increase awareness of the potential problems caused, consequences experienced and risks faced as a result of the behavior(s) in question, while helping individuals envision a better future and become increasingly motivated to achieve goals.
  • Develop a basic understanding of the strategies to improve client retention, compliance and effectiveness in substance abuse treatment.

Amy Warren, CRADC, MISA II, has been with Gateway Foundation for more than 20 years. In her current position as a Clinical Supervisor at Gateway Foundation Belleville, Ms. Warren provides substance abuse counseling to both adults and adolescents. Ms. Warren received her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Eastern Illinois University and was trained as a trainer of Motivational Interviewing from Dr. William Miller and Dr. Therese Moyers.

Brittany Ottino Psy.D.
Licensed Clinical Psychologist & Program Director
Gateway Foundation Springfield

Brittany Ottino, Psy.D., has been dedicated to treating substance abuse for 12 years. In her current position as Clinical Psychologist and Program Director at Gateway Foundation Springfield, Dr. Ottino oversees clinical services and psychiatric referrals for the102-bed residential treatment center and develops and implements new training programs for clinicians. She has extensive experience with complex clinical cases for both adolescents and adults, including administering evidence-based treatment for individuals with co-occurring disorders and those who have abused synthetic drugs, K2 and bath salts.

Dr. Ottino is a graduate of the Illinois School of Professional Psychology and completed a doctoral training rotation at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital, now part of the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center.

Michael J. Hood
Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's Office

Mr. Hood currently serves as the Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice in the Office of the Illinois Attorney General. As Deputy Attorney General, he leads the Attorney General's Criminal Enforcement, Investigations and Crime Victims Services Divisions in the coordination of the Office's crime-fighting activities with state, county and local authorities.

Previously Mr. Hood served as an Assistant State's Attorney for the Cook County State's Attorney's office in Chicago. He served as the Supervisor of the 2nd Municipal District, the Deputy Supervisor of the Traffic Division, as an Assistant in the Cold Case Homicide Unit and in the Felony Trial Division. Mr. Hood's previous teaching and lecture experience include the National District Attorneys Association, The National Conference of State Legislatures, The Illinois State Bar Association, The Chicago Bar Association and the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies.

Mr. Hood served on active duty through the rank of Major in the United States Marine Corps. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the DePaul College of Law.

Cara Smith
Deputy Chief of Staff
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's Office

Cara Smith joined the office of the Attorney General in 1992. She currently serves as Deputy Chief of Staff to Attorney General Lisa Madigan. In her position Ms. Smith focuses on a wide range of issues to include many criminal justice related matters. She has drafted, negotiated and provided extensive testimony before committees of the Illinois General Assembly on significant legislation in the areas of synthetic drugs, sex offenders and registration, sexual assault, orders of protection, stalking, child pornography, and methamphetamine. Ms. Smith has spoken nationally and on the statewide level on these issues as well as conducted extensive statewide training to the criminal justice community.

Previously Ms. Smith served as Chief of Staff and legal counsel to the Illinois Department of Corrections. She is a graduate of the Loyola University School of Law in Chicago, Illinois.
